Ganderbal: Only 1 doctor posted for night duty at district hospital

A lone doctor attends to all kinds of emergency cases and patients admitted to District Hospital here.

A source said only one doctor remains posted at the hospitalfor night duty. “Either a physician, an orthopedic surgeon or some otherspecialist remain posted for night duties. The doctor has to attend to allkinds of cases,” said the source.

   

He said one an average the hospital received 120 to 150cases of all kinds every night including the cases of accidents.

Besides, he said, around 20 to 30 patients remains admittedat the hospital round-the-clock.

“The hospital should have at least five doctors availablefor night duties. However, the lone doctor is made to shuttle from one ward toanother and form emergency to other areas to handle the cases,” said thesource.

A doctor said though the strength of the doctors at thehospital was adequate to cater to the patient rush during the day, heacknowledged there were “issues” as far as patient care during the night wasconcerned.

A local, Suhail Mehraj who was attending to his ailingrelative the hospital during three days said he said patients, particularly emergencycases including people who have met accidents being rushed to the hospitalduring the night.

“One can witnesss chaotic scenes all through the night asattendants keep on looking for doctors to attend to their patients,” saidMehraj.

Another local, Muhammas Ashraf said the hospital remainsonly hope for people from dozens of peripheral villages.

“How is it possible for a single doctor to handle allcases?” asked Ashraf.

Many attendants also complained that there was only oneticket counter at the hospital and patients have to wait in queues for longhours for their turn.

“The authorities can ease the problems of patients as wellas attendants by opening another ticket counter,” said another attendant.

Dr Mehraj Ahmed Sofi, medical superintendent of the hospitalsaid two doctors including a gynecologist remain posted at the health instituteduring the night.

He said an additional ticket counter will be opened incoming days for patients’ convenience.
