Heavy rains and strong winds on Tuesday claimed a life and damaged over 700 structures in North Kashmir's Bandipora district.
A minor girl was killed in Aloosa area of the district when heavy rains and strong winds struct the district.
The girl was identified as Rehana (10) daughter of Muhammad Shafi Chechi of Chontiwari village of Aloosa Tehsil.
The girl, according to her family had gone to graze cattle in nearby forests when the strong winds occurred. "She had taken shelter under a Kail tree which fell on her due to strong winds."
The heavy rains and strong winds also caused extensive damage to residential houses and various government buildings.
Over 700 structures were either partially or fully damaged in the district. At some places rooftops of residential house were blown away by gusty winds.
A revenue official told Greater Kashmir that during initial assessment 722 structures were found either partially or fully damaged due to strong winds in Bandipora district.
He said that 387 structures were damaged in Bandipora Tehsil, 253 in Aloosa, 7 in Ajas and 65 in Hajin Tehsil.
"Control room of Fire and Emergency Service Bandipora was also damaged as poplar trees fell on the roof of the building. Rooftops of many residential houses were blown away by the strong winds at various places. At some places trees fell on buildings damaging them either partially or fully," he said.
Due to these rains and strong winds electricity supply in the district including Aloosa, Ajas, Nowpora, Main town Bandipora and Hajin town was affected. The electricity supply was yet to be restored when this report was filed.
