Govt issues avalanche warning for 7 districts

The government on Wednesday issued for avalanche warning for avalanche-prone areas in Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts.

“The warning is valid from 5 pm of January 17 to 5 pm of January 18,” an official spokesman said, quoting additional commissioner Kashmir.

   

All deputy commissioners have been asked to take precautionary measures to avert any untoward incident, while the general public has been appealed to not venture in identified areas during the warning period, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, an official said that snow and avalanche study establishment (SASE) has said that there is “low danger avalanche warning” in higher reaches of Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Udhampur, Ramban, Kishtwar, Kargil and Leh districts as well.

 “Low danger avalanche warning signifies that the conditions may be unsafe and movement in the Nallas and Valleys of slopes, has to be avoided, as minor avalanches can get triggered on extreme slopes,” the official said.

In case of snowfall in the higher reaches of these districts, people have been advised to take precautionary measures and avoid movement in the avalanche-prone areas.

Meanwhile, on the instructions of minister for disaster management Javaid Mustafa Mir, the two divisional commissioners have issued the avalanche warning alerts and the concerned deputy commissioners have already put in place precautionary measures, the official said.

Police, SDRF, fire services and other rescue agencies have been put in a state of “yellow alert”, he said, adding: “In case of adverse weather, movement of vehicles on vulnerable areas has been ordered to be restricted.”
