Govt responsible for damages to J&K economy: G A Mir

Congress on Saturday said that the government was fully responsible for the damages caused to J&K’s economy, trade and tourism sector.

A statement of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) issued here said that addressing a party convention at Puhroo Peth in Langate, Kupwara, JKPCC President G A Mir said that the BJP-led government at New Delhi had also failed to address development issues.

He expressed concern over the hardships confronting the people due to the rising unemployment, price hike and other issues of public importance.

The convention was part of the country-wide protest launched by Congress against the unprecedented price hike on petroleum products across India. Mir said that J&K had suffered immensely on all fronts, especially trade, tourism, employment and development.

He said that the weaker sections and small scale businessmen were the worst hit while the unprecedented hike on prices of petroleum and other essentials had only added to the miseries of the people.

“Despite the damages caused to business and economy, the government has decided to impose property tax knowing that there is a sharp decline in business activities and tourism has decreased to a largest extent,” he said. “The government started punishing people under the garb of property tax, which should not be imposed keeping in view the tremendous damages caused due to the hostile measure taken by Government of India with regard to J&K after August 5 2019.”
