The students of government higher secondary school (boys) Charar-e- Sharief here on Thursday complained that the institution was partly operating from an unsafe building.
According to the students the heritage building of the institution established way back in 1962 by then prime minister of J&K, Bakshi Ghulam Muhammad was declared unsafe by R&B department, division Chadoora, in 2012.
The R&B order reads: “After a detailed inspection was conducted at the school building, it was observed that cracks have developed at various spots. The building needs re-construction to mitigate future seismic effects. Further the store, room and lab blocks are completely unsafe and unhygienic for proper functioning of the school due to the seepage of rain water.”
Thereafter, work on a new building for the school was started. Although the new building comprising eight rooms was inaugurated on 26 September 2017, by Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura, the local MLA, its construction still remains to be incomplete.
A teacher who wished not be named said they were holding only three classes in the new building while the rest of the classes were being conducted in the old unsafe building, which according to him is risky both for the students as well as the teachers.
The locals, the teachers and the students demanded that unsafe building should be dismantled to prevent any untoward incident. “Government should construct at its place a new building so that the school does not face any space crunch,” they said.
The school is also operating without the principal at the place. “The principal post in the institution lies vacant over a year,” sources said.
The students also complained that institution does not provide education in various core subjects and streams like history, tourism management, statistics, information technology, biotechnology, and commerce.
MLA Chrar-e-Sharief, Ghulam Nabi Hanjura, said, “We will soon provide commerce stream to the institution.”
Lone while admitting that the building was declared unsafe, said: “I do expect this year the old-building will be dismantled and a new construction will be raised at its place. I have already made a detailed report in this regard,” he told Greater Kashmir.
