Gym trainer’s death a case of suicide: Police

Police Wednesday claimed to have solved the mysterious death of a fitness trainer whose body was found hanging from a ceiling in a gym at Azad Gunj area of Baramulla town on December 18.

Azim Nazir of Uranbuwa Boniyar was working as a fitness trainer at a gym for over a decade and his death triggered protests by his relatives and residents of native Boniyar area, who alleged he was murdered.

Following the outcry, the police set up a special investigation team to probe the death.

The SIT members questioned 32 persons and collected some important evidence, police said.

During the course of the investigation it appeared Nazir had committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling, apparently unable to deal with a breakup with his girl from Rajasthan.

“It was revealed during the course of investigation that the deceased was in relationship with a girl (name withheld) from Rajasthan and the couple had recently parted ways which the deceased was unable to come to terms with,” police said in a statement.

“Unable to bear the shock as an extreme measure, he hanged himself.”

Police also claim that the injuries in Nazir’s eye and ear as established by medical and forensic experts were inflicted after his death, most likely by rodents.

“The electronic, circumstantial, medical and forensic evidence also established the hanging by rope, also the statements of witnesses who had knowledge of the circumstances and events thereof, recorded before the Hon’ble court substantiated the same,” read the police statement.

“Accordingly, the matter has been closed as a case of suicide.”
