High Court seeks details of money spent on solid waste management in JK

The High Court on Saturday directed the government of India to furnish details with regard to funds which have been made available to Jammu and Kashmir government for solid waste management in last five years. 

A division bench of Justice Sanjeev Kumar and Justice Sindhu Sharma sought an affidavit from GOI indicating various schemes and allocation of funds relating to solid waste management as well as the specific purposes for which the same have to be utilised. 

   

The court issued these directions after observing that no affidavit has been filed in keeping with the directions it has passed on October 29 this year. 

The court sought to know from the state government about further action on the draft action plan for solid waste management which has been put in public domain for suggestions and comments.

While hearing Public Interest Litigations, one registered by it on own motion on preservation of Sonamarg resort and the other by Environmental Policy Group on management of solid waste, the court directed the GOI through its assistant solicitor general Tahir Shamsi and state government through its senior additional advocate general B A Dar, to file the requisite affidavits. 

Advocate Shafaqat Nazir on behalf of the Environmental Policy Group submitted that nothing has been done with regard to Swach Bharat Abhiyan Grameen related to the sanitation of rural areas. 

Earlier the court had directed the Chief Secretary to convene a meeting with all stake holders to examine all the issues relating to Solid Waste Management in the state. The court had ordered that a firm action plan regarding the same was to be placed before it. 

The court had also directed Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, to file an affidavit informing the court about steps taken for the public awareness on Solid Waste Management and the amount of money spent. 

Meanwhile the court today directed the concerned authorities not to allow any constructional or repair work in Sonamarg and listed all the applications seeking permission for repairs of constructions in February next year.
