Highway re-opens after 12-hour closure

The Srinagar-Jammu highway has been reopened for traffic amid prediction of rains and snow in Kashmir.

“The road remained closed for 12 hours and was reopened this afternoon,” inspector general of police (traffic) Alok Kumar told Greater Kashmir.

Landslides triggered by rain and snow at a few places on Ramsoo-Ramban stretch had prompted the authorities concerned to stop traffic.

MeT officials said that during the past 24 hours, higher reaches of the Valley received snowfall and plains rain.

“We expect more snow and rains during the next 24 hours,” an official said when this report was filed on Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, in view of the inclement weather, divisional commissioner Kashmir Baseer Khan said all colleges in Kashmir division, which were scheduled to reopen tomorrow (Thursday) after winter vacations, will now open on Saturday, (February 23).
