In Ganderbal cop’s killing, family of six loses sole breadwinner

Ganderbal, Dec 14: Constable Rameez Ahmad Baba, who was killed in a militant attack in Zewan area on the outskirts of Srinagar yesterday, was the sole bread earner of his family, which included his aged parents, three unmarried sisters and a younger brother.

Rameez was seriously injured after militants, believed to be three in number, opened indiscriminate fire on a bus he was travelling in along with 24 other cops, in Zewan area last evening. He succumbed to his injuries today morning.

   

Two of his fellow cops-ASI Ghulam Hassan of Top Neel Bharthand Ramban, Shafique Ali (Sgct) of Mamakoti Mahore in Reasi district-were also killed in the attack. Eleven other cops were injured in the attack carried out by three Jaish militants, as per IGP Kashmir.

Rameez was recruited in the police department around three years ago and was the lone bread earner of his family, his family members told Greater Kashmir. While the job had kindled some hope, Rameez’s sudden demise has left the family of six in distress.

Pain and grief descended on Yachama Kangan village of the central Kashmir district today morning after the news of his death reached there.

Hundreds of people participated in his funeral prayers which were also attended by top civil and police officials including Superintendent of Police Ganderbal, Nikhil Borkar, CO 8th BN Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, SDPO Kangan and SDM Kangan. The deceased policeman was later laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Yachama Kangan.
