JRL calls for shutdown on Jan 21 in Gaw Kadal

The joint resistance leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik on Wednesday called for a strike in Gaw Kadal and its adjoining areas on January 21, the day CRPF troopers massacred more than 50 people in 1990.

The leadership also called for a shutdown in Handwara and Kupwara areas on January 25 and January 27 to commemorate the two massacres in these areas in 1990.

A joint statement issued here by the JRL said that a public rally would also be held at Gaw Kadal on January 21.

“The carnages at Gaw-Kadal, Handwara and Kupwara remind us of New Delhi’s forcible control and oppression.  These massacres symbolise callousness under the garb of democracy. Kashmir is indebted to the martyrs who laid down their lives for freedom and the resistance leadership pledges to continue this struggle till the achievement of the sacred goal,” the statement said.

“This (Gaw Kadal) massacre was followed by massacres at Handwara and Kupwara where dozens of Kashmiris were killed by the forces with impunity.  United India during its struggle for freedom against the British witnessed only one Jallianwala Bagh massacre but Kashmiris have witnessed dozens of such massacres that were carried out by Indian forces from 1990 and this carnage is still going on unabated,” the joint leadership said.

“The sole aim of Delhi is to terrorise the people of Kashmir through these brutal massacres and put an end to resistance movement but Delhi failed to do so in the past and will fail in the future too. In 1990, people of J&K started a people’s revolt against the forcible control and to crush this people’s resistance, army and forces started its killing machine and killed thousands of people in cold blood at the orders of political leadership,” the statement said.
