Kangan school lacks infrastructure, toilets

The students and teachers of Government Girls Higher Secondary School Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district are suffering due to inadequate infrastructure and lack of facilities in the school.

Located in the busy market in Kangan town, school management finds it difficult to accommodate about 500 girl students on the roll in the two-storey building having only a few classrooms.

Locals said lack of infrastructure and facilities in the school has forced many female students to discontinue their studies, while other students are forced to seek admissions in private schools.

“The school instead of having a play ground has a small compound,” said a group of students from the school. “Our school also lacks sufficient toilets and washrooms.”

The students also complained that the school has a small laboratory room, no staff room, and even principal’s office is functioning in a cramped room. Locals said sometimes classes are held under the open sky.

In a board meeting held at Ganderbal in 2016 followed by last year’s Chief Minister’s Awami Durbar at Ganderbal, it was decided to shift the school to other available government building. But till date nothing has been done on ground.
