Kashmir shuts on fifth hanging anniversary of Afzal Guru

Life remained paralysed in Kashmir valley on Friday due to a protest shutdown called by the Joint Resistance leadership (JRL) on the fifth hanging anniversary of Afzal Guru.

The protest was called to observe his death anniversary and to reiterate the family’s demand for his mortal remains.

Guru was secretly hanged and buried inside the Tihar jail in New Delhi on this day in 2013.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed in Srinagar city while as public transport was also off the roads.

Reports of shutdown were also received from other district headquarters of the Valley, including Sopore – native town of Guru.

Despite restrictions, mourners – including pro-freedom leaders – reached at the residence of Guru in Jageer Ghat village of Sopore to offer condolences and demand his mortal remains, they said.

Restrictions under section 144 CrPC have been imposed in the town to prevent protests against the hanging of Guru. (With inputs from Ghulam Muhammad)
