Kashmiri army man deserts unit along with rifle, ammunition

A Kashmiri army man deserted his unit during night and fled away with an AK 47 rifle and ammunition in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, sources said.

A Kashmiri army man deserted his unit during night and fled away with an AK 47 rifle and ammunition in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, sources said.

They said that the soldier, Zahoor Ahmad Thakur of 173 Territorial Army, fled from his unit in Gantmulla area of the district during the night.

Thakur is a resident of Pulwama district in south Kashmir.

Sources said that a manhunt has been launched to nab him.

Several policemen have deserted their posts and joined militant ranks in past couple of years in the valley.

However, the intention behind Thakur's desertion was not immediately known.
