Killing of 9 civilian: BUDGAM REMEMBERS VICTIMS

Shutdown was observed in parts of Budgam district on Monday against the killing of nine civilians on the polling day for Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency last year.

All shops and business establishments remained closed and public transport was off the roads in the native areas of slain civilians, which include Chadoora, Charar-e-Sharief, Pakherpora, Dalwan, Rathsuna and Chumurjoo areas in Beerwah.

   

The district administration on Sunday night had ordered closure of all colleges and higher secondary schools in the areas. Earlier scores of people attended prayers at the grave of slain Faizan Ahmad Dar, 15, at Dalwan area of Charar I sharief. Locals also offered prayers at the graves of two other slain youth at Chumurjoo and Rathsuna areas of Beerwah who were shot dead on April 9 last year.

Srinagar parliamentary seat, which was won by NC’s Farooq Abdullah, recorded only 7.1 per cent polling last year – a record low in the history of Kashmir parliamentary elections. Nine civilians were killed in forces’ action on the polling day last year. Eight civilians died last year when government forces opened fire on protestors in Budgam areas on the polling day, while another civilian died when forces opened fire in Barsoo village of Ganderbal.
