MeT forecasts rain, snow for 3 days

Meteorological department on Wednesday predicted moderate rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir for next three days from Thursday onwards.

“A fresh western disturbance is affecting Jammu and Kashmir and its adjoining areas and most likely to affect the state from 1 March morning to 3 March forenoon,” a MeT spokesman said in a statement.  

   

He said under the influence of this system, moderate rain/snow is expected at widespread places of Jammu, Kashmir. “Ladakh and Kargil may receive moderate snowfall,” he added.

The spokesman said that Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama and Budgam districts are likely to witness heavy rain and snow. 

The MeT spokesman said that forthcoming rain and snow may lead to disruption of traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway.

Meanwhile, minister for Disaster Management Relief Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Javaid Mustafa Mir has directed the Divisional and District Disaster Management Authorities to be in a state of preparedness in view of the weather forecast by the MeT, said an official.

He said the minister also instructed Inspector General of Police Traffic, J&K to ensure that all precautionary measures are taken in this respect.

The authorities also issued avalanche warning for some Kashmir and Jammu districts.  “On the basis of information received from Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment, medium danger avalanche warning has been issued for next 24 hrs in Kupwara-Chowkibal-Tangdhar,” officials said here.

Low danger warning, they said has been issued for Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban,Doda, Kishtwar Udhampur, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Gulmarg, Furkian-Z Gali,  Bandipora, Kargil, Leh districts and Srinagar-Jammu highway.

People living in avalanche prone areas have been advised by to take precautionary measures.
