Srinagar June 25: An unidentified militant was killed while his associate surrendered during a gunfight in Hanjipora area of south Kashmir's Shopian district on Friday, police said.

The gunfight broke out this afternoon after a joint team of police and security forces cordoned off the area.

In the initial exchange of fire, a militant was killed by the security forces, a police spokesperson tweeted.

The identity and affiliation of the slain militant were not immediately known.

In another tweet, the police spokesperson said that a second militant affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit surrendered during the gunfight before the security forces alongwith an AK 56 rifle.

The identity of the surrenderer militant was also not known immediately known.

Further search at the site of the gunfight was going on when this report was filed.
