A 12-year-old boy died after an unexploded shell blasted on Friday at the site of Wednesday's encounter between militants and government forces in Ladoora area of Rafiabad in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said.

Junaid Ahmad, son of Tanveer Ahmad, of Ladoora village landed on the shell when it exploded, leading to his death.

Locals staged a demonstration yesterday against the army and police against the use of IEDs and shells to damage the houses during the encounter.

A militant and a soldier had died in the gunbattle that lasted for more than eight hours.

At least five people were injured in a similar blast at the site of a gunbattle between militants and forces in Heff Shirmal area of Pulwama in south Kashmir earlier this year.
