Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today expressed deep sorrow over the demise of its provincial president for Jammu and Udhumpur Desh Raj Sharma due to cardiac arrest in Bombay yesterday.
Sharma was also the head of Awami Action Committee (AAC) district Jammu- Udhumpur.
Mirwaiz said Sharma's death is a big loss to the people's movement for right to self determination. "he was a strong supporter of this principled stand and played a very active role in promoting and educating people of Jammu and Udhumpur about it," he said.
Describing Sharma's death as a personal loss to him, Mirwaiz said, "Sharma was man of exemplary courage who despite being attacked many times by goons for his political convictions did not give up. Even his home and family were attacked but he stood like a rock."
He said, "During the current agitation Sharma raised the issue of atrocities against people in Kashmir many times and was very concerned about the human right violations perpetrated here."
Mirwaiz said, " The nation pays glowing tribute and homage to this son of the soil whose service for the freedom movement will always be remembered and will continue to inspire many to follow his footsteps."
A condolence meeting, attended by Advocate Abdul Majeed Banday, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam and other Hurriyat leaders, was held today at the amalgam headquarters, Rajbagh, here in which glowing tributes were paid to the deceased.
The meeting, while expressing grief over the demise recalled late Sharma's contributions in organising various activities of the Hurriyat in Jammu province and conveyed sympathy and solidarity of the organisation with his family.
Meanwhile, a delegation of Hurriyat and AAC left for Jammu to express solidarity with his family and convey the condolences of the Mirwaiz to the bereaved family.
