Mirwaiz marches towards Lal Chowk, detained

Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained on Saturday after he defied house arrest and attempted to march towards Lal Chowk to protest the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state.

Reports said that a police contingent deployed outside his Nigeen residence detained the Mirwaiz after he came out. He was later lodged at police station Nigeen.

   

Joint Resistance Leadership of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik have called for a march to Lal Chowk today to protest the Modi’s visit.

However, Lal Chowk has been sealed by the government forces to thwart the march.

Before his detention, Mirwaiz asked Modi, who has arrived in the state to inaugurate developmental projects, to resolve the Kashmir dispute as per the wishes of its people.

“Kashmir has been turned into a military state. We were planning to hold a peaceful rally at Lal Chowk. The cost of conflict is rising with the day. Yesterday, eleven people were killed at the border. Modi should resolve the Kashmir dispute,” he said.

Earlier, another Hurriyat (M) leader Hilal Ahmad War was arrested from Maisuma after he tried to march towards Lal Chowk. He was detained at Kothibagh police station.
