Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was detained on Monday after he defied house arrest and tried to march towards the civil secretariat in Srinagar to demonstrate against yesterday's civilian killings in Shopian.
Five civilians were killed after government forces fired into the protesters in Shopian district yesterday.
The Joint Resistance Leadership, comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, has called for a peaceful sit-in outside the secretariat today.
Reports said that Mirwaiz defied his detention and came out of his Nigeen residence. "A police party stationed there detained him and lodged him at Nigeen police station," said a spokesman.
Before his arrest, Mirwaiz appealed all sections of the society to co-operate with the leadership.
Earlier in the day, senior Hurriyat leader Hilal War was arrested at Maisuma after he tried to march towards the secretariat. He was lodged at Kothi Bagh police station.
