Hurriyat (M) Chairman and the chief cleric of Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Saturday appealed to the people to maintain religious harmony and brotherhood.
He asked them not to fall in the "provocation trap" of some miscreants, who were trying to stoke sectarian and communal tensions in Kashmir by creating a rift between Shias and Sunnis.
Denouncing the acts of these anti-unity forces in a particular area of old city Mirwaiz in a statement said these acts were harming sectarian and religious brotherhood in Kashmir and that all this was being done at a time when entire Kashmir was standing in unison and people were offering sacrifices for the Kashmir cause.
He said at this time, certain agencies had become active and were busy devising plans to set Kashmir afire by stoking sectarian and communal passions.
Stressing that for the past several months Kashmiris had been offering selfless sacrifices of their lives and properties and shown consistency in resolve while displaying unity toward the resistance movement, Mirwaiz termed these sacrifices as exemplary saying they had once again brought Kashmir issue in the focus at the international level.
Mirwaiz said this had unnerved the elements working against the interests of the people and the resistance movement, who were now trying to stoke sectarian and communal tensions to create discord between the people and play havoc with the uneasy calm prevalent in Kashmir.
Condemning the actions of the anti-resistance movement forces and anti-social elements who were trying to set Kashmir afire, he said nobody would be allowed to damage the sectarian harmony and religious brotherhood and promised to fight these elements at all levels.
