SHO police station Sonamarg and his team along with some traffic cops on Wednesday evening had a narrow escape at Zojila pass on Srinagar-Kargil highway when they were clearing the vehicles stranded due to snowfall.
Sources said a team of police from Sonamarg had gone to Zojila area after receiving information that few trucks had got stuck there.
During the rescue operation, a couple of snow avalanches including one which was quite big hit the area. However, the avalanche occurred few metres from the spot where the police team was clearing traffic.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, SHO Manzoor Ahmed Mir said as they were clearing the stranded traffic it started snowing heavily and when “we were leaving the place a couple of snow avalanches including a big one hit the area. However, luckily it occurred a little distance away from us.”
He said that the rescue team included police men from P/S Sonamarg, traffic cops and Beacon personnel.
The SHO said they had to travel 15 kilometres on foot to reach Baltal area from where they were lifted in a 4×4 vehicle of beacon.
