Nazir Ahmad Khan, a prominent citizen of Baramulla town, was today elected as president of the Auqaf-e-Islamia Baramulla in polls held in Eidgah Jadeed here.
Around 200 representatives of mosques operating in Baramulla participated in the elections. Nazir Ahmad Khan obtained 119 votes while his rival, Bashir Ahmad Kanroo bagged 81.
Auqaf in Baramulla over the years has failed as an institution, especially in addressing the social issues of the society. With the appointment of Khan as its president, people of the town have pinned hopes that he will infuse a new life into the organisation, especially in extending help to the scores of downtrodden families.
"We hope newly elected president will gear up the organisation and will work tirelessly for the overall benefit of the society," said a participant.
