NGT takes note of encroachment of Kashmir wetlands

National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken note of encroachment of Wullar, Hokersar and Kreentcu Chandhara wetlands of Pampore.

NGT directed for constitution of a joint committee ofJ&K Pollution Control Board (PCB), Wildlife Department and DeputyCommissioners of Budgam, Bandipora and Pulwama to look into illegalencroachments of Wullar , Hokersar and Kreentcu Chandhara wetlands Pampore.

   

NGT’s three member Principal bench headed by Justice AdarashKumar Goel (Chairman NGT) issued the notice on Tuesday after a petition wasfiled by RTI Activist Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat.

Advocate  RahulChowhdary counsel of the petitioner prayed before the NGT Principal bench thatauthorities at the helm of affairs were dumping municipal solid waste in Wullarand Hokersar.

The petitioner through his counsel told NGT that KreenchuChandhara wetland in Pamore was being earth filled at many places on NationalHighway Gallander (NH 44) and an irrigation canal was converted into a road andauthorities were mute spectators to this illegal activity.

” In Bandipora area Municipal Committee Bandipora wasdumping municipal solid waste in Wullar lake at Nussu Zalwan area and WullarConservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) was mute spectator to thisillegal activity in spite of providing 1.30 crore rupees to the municipalityfor scientific waste disposal several years back.”

NGT principal bench has sought the report from PCB ,Wildlife department and Deputy Commissioners within two months.
