National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken the custody of a militant who was arrested in Handwara area of Kupwara district Tuesday evening.
Superintendent of Police, Handwara, Ghulam Jeelani identified the arrested militant as Bahadur Ali alias Saifiullah Mansoor of Lahore Pakistan. He said that Bahadur was affiliated with Lashker-e-Toiba.
Soon after the arrest of Bahadur, NIA registered case. "NIA took his custody after court order," SP Jeelani told Greater Kashmir. "We handed over him to NIA."
Sources in police said that Bahadur was taken to New Delhi in a chartered flight from Srinagar Wednesday afternoon. They said that Bahadur was active in Handwara area for last two months.
The investigation by NIA can lead to more arrests from Handwara and other areas. "The people who would have sheltered and supported him will be taken to task for sure," a senior police official said here. "Things will be clear in coming two to three days."
On Tuesday, four unidentified militants were killed in a gunfight close to Line of Control (LoC)l in Nowgam area of Handwara in Kuwpara district. The gunfight erupted after Army zeroed in on a group of militants.
Tuesday's gunfight was second encounter in Nowgam in last over two weeks. On the intervening night of July 8-9, two militants were killed in a gunfight in the same sector.
Pertinently, there has been a spurt in infiltration this year. Official figures reveal that 54 militants have been able to infiltrate to Kashmir till ending June. Last year, 35 militants had infiltrated during the entire 2015.
