NIT students protest, seek postponement of exams

Protests erupted at National Institute of Technology (NIT) here with the students demanding that their exams be postponed.

The students of first and third semesterdemanded their exams should be postponed till February since they had notcompleted their syllabus owing to uncertainty in Kashmir for the last fourmonths.

   

“However, the authorities were not agreeing. It infuriated thestudents, who resorted to violence,” the eyewitnesses said. “Earlier onWednesday evening, the protesting students took faculty members hostage anddidn’t allow them to leave the campus till 8 pm.”

A senior faculty member said some “mischievous students” weretrying to spoil the career of other students and appropriate action will betaken against them.

“Indiscipline won’t be tolerated and exams would be held on time. We have given 10 days to the students for preparation. We have also given some relaxation in syllabus. We will hold the exams on time,” an official said.
