On 40th day anniversary, Handwara remembers Nayeem, other firing victims

Night protests and special prayers were held at Handwara chowk on Sunday to remember Nayeem Qadir Bhat and Iqbal Manzoor Pir who died after army opened fire on locals protesting against an alleged molestation of a schoolgirl on April 12 here.

Slogans in favour of Azadi, Islam and Nayeem were raised during the protests.

"The prayers were organized for Nayeem and others because of their 40th day anniversary today. And there couldn't be any better day than Shab-e-Barat which is being observed today," said a local.

Earlier in the day, the youths distributed juice and drinks among the pedestrians and commuters in Handwara town.

In the evening, a protest march was held at Handwara chowk where youth raised pro-Azadi and pro-Islam slogans, besides rememberingNayeem with slogans like, "aayee aayee Nayeem teri Yaad aye."
