PDD employee electrocuted

A Power Development Department (PDD) employee died of an electric shock on Saturday in Baramulla district.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ramzan Lone (50) from Wagoora village of the district.

Witnesses said he was repairing service line at New Colony when he was electrocuted.

Following the incident he was rushed to a local hospital, from where he was referred to Srinagar. However, he succumbed on the way.

Soon after news of Lone’s death spread, his colleagues held a protest against authorities accusing them of negligence.

PDD official from the area said action will be taken in the case.

Meanwhile, a police said they have registered a case in the incident.

It may be mentioned that in the past many employees of the department, most of them working temporarily, have become the victim of the electrocution.

According to sources, there are cases of some employees who have died because of the electrocution, pending in the department for compensation and compassionate employment.

A source said  that the department has denied employment in many cases where the employees were not working in the department on substantive basis.

“There is need that the government should take a policy decision in this regard so that the victims’ families are rehabilitated,” said an employee wishing not to be named.
