PDP chief’s cavalcade pelted with stones at Bijbehara

The cavalcade of Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti was pelted with stones in Khiram village of Bijbehara area in southern Anantnag district on Monday, officials said.

An official said that Mehbooba was heading towards Bijbehara to attend a workers’ convention after paying obeisance at Khiram shrine when her cavalcade came under a barrage of stones near the village in the Dochnipora belt along the Bijbehara-Pahalgam road.

Mehbooba escaped unhurt in the attack but one of her escort vehicles suffered damage and its driver also sustained injuries, he said.

“The driver was hit in his head and was treated at a local hospital,” the official said. The police cordoned off the area and provided a safe passage to Mehbooba, who later reached Bijbehara where she was scheduled to address a workers’ convention, he said.

Later, speaking to her workers at Bijbehara, Mehbooba admitted that her cavalcade came under attack from stone-pelters. “While on way from Khiram Dargah to this place, stones were pelted and the driver of the vehicle escorting us got injured,” she said.
