Picture of Kupwara youth wielding gun goes viral

A picture of a youth from this north Kashmir district, carrying a gun, has gone viral on social media, triggering fears that he might have joined militancy.

A resident of Azharabad village in Gulgam here, 21-yearImtiyaz Ahmad Mir had left home on June 11.

   

Today, his picture surfaced on social media in which he canbe seen wielding the gun. As per the details on the picture Mir has joinedHizbul Mujahideen militant outfit on June 12 and his nom de guerre is Moin UlIslam.

Mir was running a photocopying shop outside Government HighSchool Hirie, his family members said.

According to his relatives Mir had returned home from theshop in the afternoon of June 11, before he went missing.

He had told his mother that he was going to Kupwara town tomake some purchases for his shop.

“But when he did not return home till late evening we gotworried and called our relatives and his (Mir) friends to know about hiswhereabouts,” said Mir’s father Ghulan Nabi.

Mir’s mother had undergone a surgery few days before he lefthome, “He knows our situation. I am bedridden and his father also remains ill.I request my son to return home,” said his mother.

One of Mir’s relative, Ashiq Ahmad said the family hasalready registered a missing report with Kupwara Police Station.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, Yasir Ahmadsaid they have constituted two teams, one each in Kupwara and Handwara, totrace Mir.

He said Police was verifying authenticity of the picture inwhich Mir is seen wielding gun. “We are ascertaining whether he has joinedmilitancy,” Yasir told Greater Kashmir.
