Police asked to file report on Gogoi episode

Court of chief judicial magistrate Srinagar on Saturday issued directions to Khanyar police to file a status report in the case involving army Major LeetulGogoi who was held with a girl at a hotel in Dalgate on May 23.

The directions were issued after chairman International Forum for Justice J&K, Ahsan Untoo moved an application seeking directions as to what police has done in the case and why the accused army officer was set free from police station.”It seems police has disposed of the matter in a hush hush manner and didn’t follow the procedure laid down by the law,” advocate TasveerSujhat submitted in an application before the court.

“Major Gogoi had booked a room in a hotel at Khanyar Srinagar but given the present scenario in the valley no army official is allowed to  travel across Kashmir as a civilian except in highly secured areas,” the advocate told the court, adding that it is clear that the room was booked by the accused Major with some “ulterior designs.”

The advocate further told the court that within “only half an hour of the shameful episode, the police let major Gogoi, his associate Sameer and the girl free without following the due procedure of law.”

“The conduct of the police in this case reveals that it is not interested in probing the matter under the relevant provisions of law which they are bound to do keeping in view the gravity of the matter,” the advocate told the court.

Last year Major Gogoi sparked a row when he tied up a man in front of the army jeep and paraded him to scare away protestors in Budgam district.
