Police destroy poppy crop spread over 400 kanal of land

Jammu and Kashmir Police have initiated a massive drive against poppy cultivation in the state.

In a statement here a police spokesman said, “Incoordination with other stake holders, the police have destroyed the illicitcrop on 390 kanals in different districts of the state during past few days.”

   

“In Pulwama district alone police teams of different policestations were deployed in their respective areas to destroy the contraband andstanding crop spread over 40 kanals in the district was destroyed. In Anantnagand Kulgam district more than 100 kanal of land were cleared from the poppycultivation. In Shopian and Awantipora poppy cultivations spread over 300kanals has been destroyed,” he said.

“In other districts of the state also, police teams are onjob to retrieve the agriculture land from the poppy cultivation. In Baramullaand Budgam police have tightened noose against poppy cultivation to eradicatethe drug menace from the state,” the spokesman added.

“Besides, J&K Police are continuing its drive againstthe drug peddlers in the state and in recent times a large quantity of drugswas seized at different places across the state. Fifty six drug peddlersindulging in the illicit trade were booked under relevant sections of lawduring past two months,” he added.

He said that on 8 May, 2019, Ramban police during a raid ona hotel in Banihal seized 30 Kgs of Heroin which was to be transported to someother states of the country. This week, the police during surprise checking ofvehicles on Jammu- Srinagar National highway at Digdol seized 33 gunny bagscontaining 650 Kgs of poppy from an oil tanker. “Last Monday 420 kgs of poppywas recovered from Krikadal Bijbehara, Anantnag. This strategy adopted to fightthe drug menace by destroying the poppy cultivation as well as action againstthe peddlers will continue,” the spokesman added.
