Police use force against protesting stone quarry holders in Pantha Chowk

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse quarry holders who had staged a protest at Pantha Chowk to press for revocation of ban on quarrying.

The protest sit-in had triggered a massive traffic jam in the area, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded for hours together since today morning.

An eye witness said that the policemen lobbed scores of tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. He said several protesters were injured in the forces' action.

Hundreds of quarry holders including women staged a protest early today morning. They were carrying banners and raised slogans to demand an end to the ban.
