Pulwama girl’s killing: SHRC seeks report from Govt

A week after video of a girl’s killing went viral on social media, state human rights commission (SHRC) has directed civil administration and police to submit detailed report on the incident.

Last week, the video of a girl with folded hands being shot dead went viral on social media. The girl was later identified as Ishrat Muneer of Dangerpora village of Pulwama district, and was the cousin of recently slain militant commander Zeenat-ul-Islam.

The commission has directed deputy commissioner and senior superintendent of police Pulwama to submit report in the matter.

The petition was filed by rights activist MM Shuja.

In his petition, the petitioner said that slain girl “has been brutally and mercilessly murdered by some unknown gunman.”

He also stated that the incident is not an isolated incident, but third “in the series” in the past few months.

“All the three incidents appear to be well designed with a view to perpetrate the reign of terror on the women folk being the soft target as also an attempt to display the same in a heroic manner,” the petitioner stated before the commission.

While, saying that it is responsibility of the state to protect the “life and liberty of every citizen”, the petitioner has said these “kind of murderers cannot be expected and also forgiven in a civilized society”.

Referring to the “similar” kind of cases in the past, before this incident, the petitioner said: “police and the agencies of the state have miserably failed to protect the lives of these three women,” while “failing to identify the unknown gunman and also miserably failing to deal with the connected cyber crime of making videos viral”.

The petitioner has also urged the commission to conduct investigation into all the three cases through its own investigation wing “as the normal police agencies have failed to unearth the group / individual responsible for brutal murders and making their videos viral.”

In his plea before the commission, the petitioner also urged the commission to make “comprehensive recommendation” to prevent recurrence of such incidents and also sought adequate compensation to the victim families.
