The residents of Hajam Mohalla Jandwal and Zoi Mohalla Saidapora in Pulwama district are without potable water for the past 15 years, causing immense hardships to the residents.

Hajam Mohalla village is at a distance of 5 km while ZaiMohalla is 6 km from the district headquarters.

“We have been suffering for want of drinking water for the past 15 years now,” locals said. “A link road connecting Hajam Mohallah and Zai Mohallah was widened from our village, which damaged to the water supply line 15 years ago.”

Nazir Ahmad Hajam, a local said that since then the authorities have not bothered to lay the pipes.

“In 2016, two bore-wells were dug but after only a few months the bore-wells got damaged and no one repaired them,” said Farooq Ahmad, another resident.

The residents said that they are forced to fetch water from a nearby stream and a house in the neighbouring village.

“We have been fetching water from another village for a long period now,” another resident Abdul Rasheed Hajam said.

The residents of Zoi Mohallah said that they too were connected to the same water supply line and had been rendered without water supply from past 15 years.

Locals said that they several times visited the concerned offices and appealed them to re-connect the villages with water supply lines but to no avail.

Assistant Executive Engineer, Public Health Engineering and Water Supply department, Ashfaq Ahmad said the department would connect the area under ‘Har Ghar Jal’ scheme and work on it would start in March.

“Until then, we will send water tankers to the area so that the people do not face any problem,” he said.
