Roofs of 3 residential houses collapse in Handwara

Heavy snowfall continued in northern Kupwara district for the second consecutive day Thursday, causing damage to some residential houses and leading to closure of several link and border roads.

The damaged houses belonged to Reshmi Begum, wife of late Abdul AhadShiekh, a resident of MuqamShanoo area in Handwara, said ShahidHussain, tehsildarQaziabad.

   

Snow started in the district Wednesday morning and continued throughout Thursday with greater intensity.

The upper reaches of the district received more than two feet of snow while plains got around one feet of snow Thursday.

The Sadhna Top connecting Karnah area with the district headquarters received two and a half feet snow, leading to its closure.

Farkiyan which connects Keran and Z-gali and Machil with the district headquarters is closed for the past many weeks now.

Snow in Kakroosa, Kralpora, Langate, Sogam, Drugmulla and Handwara town was reported to be one-foot in depth.

Electricity remained snapped for the second consecutive day Thursday following massive damage to transmission lines, transformers and electricity poles.

An official said efforts are on to restore the power supply.

“Electricity in Kupwara town has been restored. There has been a heavy damage to the power supply lines across the district. Continuous snowfall is creating hurdles in the restoration operation,” said executive engineer, PDD, Shameem Ahmad.

Several villages in the hilly areas are cut-off from the district headquarters as the snow clearance is still going on, local residents said.

A roads and buildings department official said the road clearance work going on “but it will take some time to clear all link roads because it is snowing heavily.”

Thin movement of shoppers was seen in main Kupwara and Handwara markets due to accumulation of snow.
