Scores of civilians were injured after government forces fired pellets and tear gas to break up protests in various villages of south Kashmir's Shopian district on Sunday.

Reports said that massive protests erupted in various villages located adjacent to Dragad and Kachdoora where fierce gunfights are underway since last night.

They said that youth took to streets and tried to march towards the gunfight sites in Dragad and Kachdoora to help the trapped militants escape.

However, police and paramilitary forces deployed in the area fired pellets and tear gas to prevent the march, triggering clashes in which dozens of youth were injured.

The injured youth were shifted to local health centers for treatment.

Meanwhile, firing was going on from both the sides at the gunfight sites. At least, one militant has been killed in the gunfight at Dragad so far. Three soldiers have been wounded as well.

Train and Internet services were suspended in both the Shopian and Anantnag districts following the killing of two militants in Anantnag and Shopian districts of south Kashmir.
