Shabir Shah’s health worsening in Tihar: DFP

Since Shabir Shah’s health is deteriorating at Tihar Jail, the government of India would be responsible if anything bad happens to him, secretary general Democratic Freedom Party Muhammad Abdullah Tari told reporters on Thursday.

“Jail manuals are being thrown to winds. Shah is denied basic treatment. He is suffering from multiple ailments,” Tari said.

He said Shah’s wife, a doctor, who met her husband a few days ago found Shah quite weak and not able to walk properly.

DFP spokesman Fayaz Ahmed Saudagar told reporters that Shah’s wife had been allowed to meet him for only 18 minutes after a five-hour wait outside the jail.

Saudagar said Shah’s elder daughter fell on the ground on seeing her father’s condition and had to be brought out of the jail with effort.

“Shah has lost weight in his 6 by 8 cell and has developed dark circles around his eyes. He is not able to stand properly because of weakness and back ache. He gets frequent fainting attacks,” he said.

“Irony is that Shah sahib already had multiple ailments but our repeated pleas for treatment were ignored by jail authorities. He was not even allowed to take his regular medicines and now as his health started deteriorating further it still took jail authorities five months to make the diagnoses,” he said.

Saudagar said Shah has been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, hypertension and heart blocks for which he will require angiography followed by angioplasty.

“But nothing has been done till date. All these tests and diagnoses took the jail authorities months though all tests were supposed to be of emergency nature,” Saudagar said.

He called upon human rights organisations to come to the rescue of the “prisoner of conscience”

“We warn New Delhi and its local agents of dire consequences if anything happens to our beloved leader,” he said.
