Shopian reels under darkness

Four days after snowfall, the power supply in south Kashmir’s Shopian district is yet to be restored even as there has been significant improvement in the weather.

Scores of residents of Shopian said the entire district has been reeling under darkness since Saturday afternoon after a transmission tower was damaged by the snow.

“Just a few inches of snow and the whole district has been plunged into darkness,” rued Javed Ahmad.

He said the failure of the authorities to restore the power supply in the district raises question marks over the preparedness of district administration.

Another resident complained that the PDD officials were not showing interest to fix the damaged transmission lines in the area.

Many students appearing in board exams appealed the authorities to restore the power supply immediately as “we face lot of difficulties in preparations for examination in absence of power.”

Mohammad Amir, a student said, “I cannot study after the evening in the absence of electricity. The authorities should immediately restore the supply.”

Additional deputy commissioner Shopian Shabir Ahamad told Greater Kashmir that the snow had damaged one of the transmission towers in Kanipora, Ganowpora area. “The repairing work is being carried out and the electricity would be retorted by Wednesday evening,” he added.

The electricity was yet to be restored in the area when this report was filed in the evening.
