Shopian shuts on second consecutive day to mourn student’s killing

A spontaneous shutdown is being observed in Shopian district of south Kashmir on second consecutive day today to mourn the killing of a student during a shootout in Anantnag on Thursday.

All shops and other business establishments are closed while traffic is off the roads. No militant or separatist outfit has called for the shutdown.

Police said 21-year-old Shakeeb Shabir was killed when militants travelling in a car opened fire on the forces. “The fire missed the target and hit Shakeeb who was also travelling in a taxi,” said a police official.
