Six missing after avalanche hits passenger cab in north Kashmir’s Kupwara

Six passengers are missing after a snow avalanche hit a passenger cab at Sadhna Top in Tangdhar area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday.

The cab (bearing registration number JK 09 A 3249) was on its way from Kupwara to Karnah when the mishap took place around 4pm.

Six passengers, including three women, are believed to be trapped under a huge mound of snow, police sources said, adding the rescue operations are underway to rescue them.

“A 10-year-old boy Sulaiman and driver Zahoor Ahmad, have been retrieved so far but a police team is on the spot to rescue other passengers,” they said.

Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Khalid Jahangir told Greater Kashmir that a police team is on the spot to rescue the missing passengers.

“I hope all passengers will be rescued,” Jahangir said.

The 70-km long only surface link connecting Karnah with Kupwara usually remains closed for at least three months during winters due to heavy snowfall.

However this winter season, the road is through for traffic after few days of closure in mid-December following snowfall.
