South Kashmir shuts on second consecutive day to mourn Shopian killings

A complete shutdown was observed for second consecutive day on Tuesday across south Kashmir districts to mourn the Shopian killings.

All shops, business establishments, government and private offices remain closed in Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama districts headquarters.

The public transport was off the roads in all these areas, reports said.

On Sunday evening four civilians and two militants were killed in army firing at Pahnoo village in Shopian district.

While the locals said the civilians were killed in cold blood, army said they retaliated after their vehicle was fired at by the militants.

An official said that three civilians were accompanying a militant who fired at them from a car when they were signalled to stop at a checkpoint. Bodies of fourth civilian and another militant were found later.

Meanwhile, high speed mobile Internet services remained off for the second consecutive day in south Kashmir; however, low speed Internet was restored in Anantnag district on late Monday evening.
