Srinagar-Leh highway re-opening gets delayed this year

A team of officials from Ganderbal district administration and police Sunday visited Zojilla Pass to review the status of the Sonamarg-Drass road along the Srinagar-Leh Highway.

The team was led by Deputy Commissioner GanderbalHashmat Aliand Senior Superintendent of Police of the district, Khalil Muhammad Poswal.

   

The officials took stock of the road condition from Sonamargtowards Drass and also inspected the widening and repairing works beingundertaken by the Border Roads Organisation to facilitate traffic movement inZojilla area as early as possible.

Earlier on Saturday, Deputy Commissioner KargilBaseer-ul-Haqand SSP KargilVinod Kumar and SSP traffic (Rural) Muzafar Ahmad Shah alsovisited Zojilla area to inspect the condition of the road.

The inspection reports, of both Kargil and Sonamarg sides,will be submitted to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir after which a decisionregarding re-opening of the road will be taken, an official source said.

Officials said the heavy accumulation of snow on the roadthis year, especially in Zojilla stretch, and repeated snow avalanches in thearea hampered early re-opening of the strategic highway, which remains closedfor winter months.

In 2018, the Srinagar-Leh highway was opened for traffic onApril 6.
