Srinagar-Leh highway reopens after two days

Sonamarag, Dec 7: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway reopened for traffic on Tuesday after remaining closed for two days due to snowfall on Saturday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Traffic, Ganderbal, Mehraj Ud Din Raina told Greater Kashmir that traffic was restored on the highway today and around 150 vehicles including 120 HMVs were allowed to move towards Ladakh from Sonamarg even as the stranded vehicles were also allowed from Kargil to Srinagar.

   

After improvement in weather following Saturday’s snowfall, Project Vijayak and Beacon of the Border Roads Organisation pressed its men and machinery into service to clear the road of the snow which had accumulated at Zojila and Meenamarg areas of Drass along the highway.

An official said that priority is to clear all the stranded vehicles on either side before allowing any fresh traffic movement on the highway.

DySP Traffic Ganderbal, Mehraj along with police and Beacon officials had been deployed to monitor the traffic restoration at Zojila after the snowfall.

As per the Traffic Department, one-way traffic from Kargil towards Srinagar will be allowed on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road on Wednesday.
