Streetlights in Tral defunct for 8 years, add to peoples’ woes

For the past eight years authorities have failed to repair defunct streetlights in this township of Pulwama district, despite people having repeatedly taken up the matter with local administration.

The electrical and mechanical wing of roads and buildingsdepartment had installed the lighting system in the town in 2011. But, withinfew months the entire system developed snag and since then it hasn’t beenrepaired, an official confirmed.

Many residents who spoke to Greater Kashmir said that thelighting system, particularly on sub-district hospital road, Hamdania marketand bus stand went out of order many years ago.

“In absence of streetlights it becomes very difficult tomove out during late evening and night hours, in case of any emergency. Theouter lighting system of sub district hospital is also defunct for many yearsnow,” Shoaib Muhammad, a local said.

Though municipal committee Tral has installed a few lightsat some specific points in the town the proper streetlight system is completelymissing.

“Despite many representations to authorities concerned, toeither repair or replace the defunct lights, nothing has been done so far” saidMohammad Ayoub, a local trader.

As per local trader fraternity the absence of street lightshas affected their business. They say during evening time the customers flow tothe markets decreases suddenly as people prefer not to venture out in darkens.

Today, the traders and residents made a fresh appeal to thedeputy commissioner Pulwama to intervene and direct the department concerned toaddress their long pending demand.

An official in R&B division Pulwama passed the buck onelectrical and mechanical wing of the department over the defunct streetlights.”It is not within our jurisdiction,” he said.
