Students protest against shortage of teachers in Handwara school

Students of Government High School Hangha in Mawer area of Handwara Wednesday morning held protests against the inadequate number of teachers in their school.

The students, joined bytheir parents, blocked the Mawer-Handwara road for an hour to register theirprotest against the shortage of staff. “We are facing problems due to absenceof science teacher in our school despite repeated demands to higher authorities. So we were forced to come on road and protest,” said Ishfaq Ahmad of 7th class.

The parents of the agitating students said that it wasunfortunate that despite having good strength of students in this school theeducation department is not providing adequate staff, citing overstaffing inother schools. “If the students are facing shortage of teachers why thedepartment is taking so long to depute more teachers to this school,” saidTariq Ahmad, a local resident.

Zonal education officer Mawer, Adil Mohidin, told GreaterKashmir that there is enough staff in the school as per the allotment.”They are demanding one more science teacher. We cannot depute one more teacherto the school, but we will replace one teacher with science teacher in theschool to fulfil their demand,” said Adil Mohidin.

With the assurance from the ZEO that their demand will befulfilled, the students called off their protest and started regular classwork.
