Sumbal protests against bad roads, no garbage dumping site

Scores of traders and residents staged a protest demonstration in Sumbal Thursday amid a complete shutdown against lack of basic amenities in the town of Bandipora district.

The protestors blocked Srinagar-Bandipora road near Sumbalbridge and disrupted vehicular traffic movement for several hours.

"Roads of the town are in a shambles, there is nogarbage dumping site in the town," said Nazir Ahmad Reshi, secretary of thetown's traders federation.

He said that municipal body of Sumbal has failed to removetrash since the last one month even from the main town which does not haveproper designated garbage dumping site.

The protestors threatened to prolong the agitation if theirdemands were not fulfilled immediately.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Zahoor Ahmadadmitted the traders' and residents' demands and grievances were genuine andthat he would take it up with the district development commissioner.

"I visited the town and myself noticed that there aregarbage mounds everywhere in the town and roads to are in bad condition. Wewould try to redress these grievances as early as possible," Zahoor Ahmad said.
