Summoning of social activist Sajad Kargili evokes condemnation

Ganderbal, Nov 3: Several political, social and religious organisations in Kargil Wednesday condemned the summoning of social activist Sajad Hussain Kargili.

Ladakh Police filed a case against Kargili for tweeting about the violence in the state of Tripura where reports of communal violence had surfaced recently.

The Police had issued a show-cause notice dated October 29 to the activist and said that his post could spread hate and dislike against a particular community.

“As Kargil district has lots of visitors from other parts of the country comprising members of different religious communities, such tweets by you may result in harassment of such visitors in Kargil,” the Police notice read.

He was booked under Sections 107 and 151 on charges of attempting to commit a breach of the peace.

Kargili was asked to report to the concerned magistrate for an explanation.

Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), an amalgam of various political, social and religious organisations in Kargil, condemning the Police move said that such action goes against the tenets of democracy and Indian constitution.

KDA in a statement said that summoning Kargili and student leaders violates the basic constitutional rights of freedom of expression and liberty of thought in the democratic setup that values dissent.

Condemning Kargili’s summoning, AnjumaJamiat-ul-IsnaAshariaKargil (AJUIA) said that this was not the way to deal with a democratic protest as it was an elementary right in a democratic society.

AJUIA Kargil President Nazir Mehdi Mohammadi urged the authorities to withdraw the charges against Kargili.

Amjuman-e-Sahib ZamanKargil also condemns the summoning of Kargili.
