Teenage girl among three civilians killed after army opens fire in Kulgam

Three civilians, including a teenage girl, were killed and at least five others injured after army opened fire on protesters in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday.

Local sources said that the army opened fire on protesters who pelted them with stones in Hawoora area of Redwani.

   

All the injured were taken to nearby Primary Health Centre (PHC) Frisal where three among them were declared brought dead, they said.

The deceased have been identified as Shakir Ahmad Khanday (22) son of Mohd Hussain Khanday, Irshad Ahmad (20) son of Abdul Majeed and Andleeb Jan (16) daughter of Ali Mohammad.

Meanwhile, Internet service has been suspended in Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama districts.

A police spokesman, in a statement, said that an army patrol in while moving through Hawoora Mishipora area today afternoon was pelted (with stones) by the miscreants.

“Consequently, army tried to disperse the miscreants and in the process five individuals sustained injuries,” he said.

The injured persons were evacuated to nearby hospital. However, later three persons succumbed to the injuries, including a girl. Two other individuals are stated to be stable.

Police has started investigation into the matter, he said.
