Untoo demands fresh probe

Rights activist Ahsan Untoo on Friday demanded a fresh probe into Handwara massacre, in which more than 20 people were shot dead by BSF soldiers on 25 January 1990.

A FIR was registered in the incident, but police records maintain accused BSF men as “untraceable”. The case was also listed before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), but it disposed the case of citing “lack of cooperation” by the BSF unit to which the accused belonged.

“Till this date the government did not answer our queries as to what led to this massacre. Killed persons were not militants but civilians who were protesting peacefully,” said Untoo in a statement.
